British doctor reports she was raped in St Lucia Tourism interest…

first_imgPhoto Courtesy of independent.co.uk A British Doctor has claimed that she was raped while a women’s only sailing break in St Lucia. The woman, 45-year-old Georgina Mortimer, was attacked in her bedroom at Rodney Bay within hours of arriving, according to the reports. The mother of two reported that the attack lasted 15 minutes, with the rapist fleeing after someone started knocking on her door. The victim later said she discovered that there were 60 cases of rape reported in St Lucia, in the last year. The incident has drawn the ire of the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA) which expressed concern about the level of criminal activity against visitors in Saint Lucia.“It is very concerning and it is something that we have got to pay attention to,” SLHTA Chief Executive Officer, Noorani Azeez said in relation to crime on the Island.“That information is going to reach far and wide in a very short space of time. I think perhaps we need to reach out to them a bit more frequently, give them an update as to what is going on if it is not already being done, provide more timely status of what’s happening if it is not already being done – you know, I think more engagement will help to address some of the pain that they are going through right now, as well as making the necessary resources available so that the legal system can process these and other outstanding cases,” he said.“As a country – as a people we have got to do what we can to be vigilant and address these issues. But you know, it is one thing to talk the talk but it is another thing to walk the walk,” the SLHTA official was quoted by the St Lucia Times as saying.last_img read more

AUDIO: I’ve Proven My Critics Wrong – Boboye

first_imgTechnical Adviser of title-chasing Plateau United Kennedy Boboye says he has been able to prove his critics wrong following the impressive run of the ‘Peace Boys’ in the 2016/17 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season.Boboye’s side are comfortably on top of the NPFL standings with 62 points from 34 matches, 6 points clear of second-placed MFM FC, with just four rounds of games left until the end of the current campaign. The former Sunshine Stars and Abia Warriors coach was heavily criticized at the beginning of the season for losing momentum at his previous sides during the second stanza of the season despite making a good start. But in an exclusive chat with www.busybuddiesng.com, the 43-year old was quick to explain that those criticisms were not factual.“People that are saying Boboye’s Sunshine (Stars) and Abia Warriors…… they don’t have their facts,” he said.“In Sunshine, I was with Sunshine until the last day we played our league match with Enyimba. We drew in that game and that was why we didn’t get the continental ticket. It wasn’t a bad season for Sunshine.”“It was only in Abia Warriors that I came and after some time, myself and the management, things weren’t working out fine the way I expected it to be, and I just simply resigned.”“So people should be talking with facts before they make statements.”Plateau United are aiming to win the NPFL title for the first time in their history and are just 10 points away from achieving the feat but Boboye insists there is still work to be done as his wards are not carried away.“We will just keep working hard; keep fighting because we are not there yet. Until the last day of the league (season), that is when we will know where we are.”“We are not big-headed; we are just keeping our heads cool to make sure we fight and get everything we intend getting in each game we go out to play.“We are not moved; we’ll still be working hard to get what we want,” he concluded.Aside from leading the standings, Plateau United have been outstanding statistically:18 – Highest number of wins this season.46 – Highest number of goals scored.21 – Least number of goals conceded (best defense).25 – Best goals difference.8 – Least number of losses.13 – Most number of away points (two wins and 7 draws on the road).Audio Playerhttps://www.busybuddiesng.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Boboye-2-August-15.mp300:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.Audio Playerhttps://www.busybuddiesng.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Boboye-August-15.mp300:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume. Appeal loss sees Ladbrokes hit with £70 million HMRC tax charge

first_img UK business news sources have reported this weekend, that bookmaker Ladbrokes has been hit with a £70 million tax charge relating to an overturned UK Revenue & Customs (HMRC) ‘2008 tax avoidance’ scheme. The UK Tax Tribunal stated that Ladbrokes Group and its auditor Deloitte knowingly exploited a 2008 tax loophole relating to loans between corporations and third parties to minimise Ladbrokes full-year tax bill.Auditor Deloitte had set up an arrangement between group subsidiaries ‘Ladbrokes International’ and ‘Travel Document Services’, in which ‘an artificially manufactured fall in the value of shares in one company would be used to create a loss in the other company for tax purposes’.HMRC governance states that during the fiscal period, Ladbrokes Group suffered no actual losses and used the loophole to avoid paying corporate taxes. UK Customs officials, further detailed that nine corporations using the same type of scheme had conceded to the Tribunal and paid the taxes owed.Ladbrokes conceded that the arrangements were intended to avoid tax but argued in court that anti-avoidance rules did not catch them out – HMRC disagreed. Making its ruling in favour of HMRC, the Tax Tribunal rejected all of Ladbrokes arguments further stating “the essence of the scheme was to exploit a perceived loophole in the code for taxation of loan relationships.”Jennie Granger, Director General of Compliance at HMRC, criticised Ladbrokes for taking its appeal to court, stating that the bookmaker would have been ‘better off just paying the taxes’.She said: “Ladbrokes would have been better off just paying the tax but instead they pursued this lengthy legal dispute with HMRC. Avoidance schemes like this just don’t work and HMRC will always take firm action against them. The bookie gambled and lost when the odds of success could not have been lower.”Furthermore, its auditor Deloitte has been criticised by  UK MPs for clearly advising its clients to avoid paying tax by implementing the complex avoidance scheme. This weekend Ladbrokes governance stated that it was aware of the Tribunal judgement and that the company would now move to consider its options.
