His on-ball defense has been a factor in the Lakers’ start as the top defense in the NBA (99.5 defensive rating).“Defensively, he sets the tone for us. And we gotta step up,” Lakers forward Anthony Davis said. “When he missed the Chicago game, our defense kind of slipped a little bit. We gotta come out with a defensive intensity to pick up in his absence and obviously we have a certain play that he destroyed Phoenix with. So little things like that are going to change, but we gotta hold the fort down until Avery gets back.”The Lakers have some options to replace him, which could be further limited depending on the availability of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who was listed as questionable with an ankle injury ahead of Friday’s game against the Sacramento Kings, but who Vogel said would be available to play. The Lakers also have Alex Caruso, who has seized a regular rotation role, and veteran Rajon Rondo, who recently returned from a calf strain that kept him sidelined for nearly a month. Quinn Cook has also played point guard sparingly for the Lakers.Related Articles Trail Blazers beat Grizzlies in play-in, earn first-round series with the Lakers How athletes protesting the national anthem has evolved over 17 years Lakers practice early hoping to answer all questions “It’s a factor but it’s not the only factor,” he said. “We have a lot of ways we can go with this, and while I love what we’re doing on the defensive end, it’s a two-sided game. And we’ll make the decision accordingly.”The Lakers did get positive news on other injury fronts: Davis is expected to return after sitting out against the Golden State Warriors. While Davis has experienced shoulder soreness for the past few weeks, he said a rib injury on the same side he suffered in Phoenix was what drove the decision to rest Wednesday. He’ll warm up Friday night at Staples Center before the final decision.“You don’t want to continue to play through something and then it gets worse,” he said. “So it’s always sitting in the back of your head. But at the same time, you want to play. So you gotta listen to your body, be honest with the training staff … kind of do what’s best for the betterment of the team.”Vogel said Rondo’s minutes restriction has risen to 20 for Friday’s game.center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error Vogel said the defensive role Bradley filled will not necessarily be the defining factor for choosing his replacement. LOS ANGELES — Avery Bradley, one of the Lakers’ quietly essential starters during a 9-2 run, will miss at least a week with a hairline fracture in his right leg.The injury has been bothering Bradley since a Nov. 3 game in San Antonio, when he got into a collision with Dejounte Murray in the fourth quarter. Bradley missed one game but had been still feeling discomfort in his leg since he returned. He was added to the injury report Thursday afternoon after an MRI revealed the fracture. The fracture, the Lakers said, is in the right fibular head, a non-weight-bearing bone of the leg. The team estimated the guard will miss one to two weeks, then be re-evaluated.The Lakers, who already have felt the sting of injury plenty this season, hardly need Bradley’s absence.
