Teamwork set to avoid claims

first_img Previous Article Next Article Related posts:No related photos. Teamwork set to avoid claimsOn 30 May 2000 in Personnel Today Armed forces retailer Naafi and the MSF union have struck a deal to keep disputes out of employment tribunals. As part of their new partnership agreement, first reported in Personnel Today last October, they have agreed to resolve matters jointly, or through a third party such as Acas, without involving the courts.Cyril Carter, MSF regional organiser, said the deal is the first of its kind agreed by the union. It is thought to be unique in the trade union movement. The deal will see the company’s procedures scrutinised by the union in exchange for the union backing fewer cases.Mike Nicholson, HR director at Naafi, said it is a major step forward in staff-management relations and will provide protection to both sides. He admitted that Naafi has had a problem with claims being brought against it.Under the deal anyone who believes they have been unfairly dismissed, but whose appeal has been rejected, will have their case investigated by the MSF and Naafi. If there is a case to answer it will be resolved through arbitration, only going to tribunal as a last resort. If there is not a case the union will not back a member wanting to go to tribunal.Carter said the intention is to cut out the need to go to tribunal, not to prevent people going. He stressed tribunals will still be a last resort and people will be able to make claims without union backing.“What we are saying is that if Naafi has acted reasonably we would advise that member that their chances at tribunal would be pretty slim,” he said. The deal is the latest measure brought in by Nicholson to improve staff-management relations.Carter said, “There has been a definite change of climate and culture over the last two years. Before that a partnership agreement would not have been contemplated by either side.”www.naafi.co.uk www.msf.org.uk Comments are closed. last_img read more

Beached Sailboat Towed From 21st Street in Ocean City

first_imgThe Midpoint out of Savannah, Ga., sits high and dry on the tide line on the beach at 21st Street in Ocean City, NJ, Tuesday morning as it waits for a tow at high tide.A sailboat bound for Florida ran aground in Ocean City overnight and sat high and dry on the beach at 21st Street for most of Tuesday as it waited for high tide and a tow.A TowBoat U.S. Shamrock Marine Towing crew successfully pulled the boat off the beach at about 4:35 p.m.The “Midpoint” out of Savannah, Ga., made its unplanned stop in relatively calm seas last night.TowBoat U.S. Capt. John C. Bodin said the boat beached twice in 12 hours. His crew towed the boat off the beach at 19th Street at midnight. The Midpoint captain reportedly was trying to fix a faulty steering cable, but an anchor equipment failure led him to drift back onto the beach.A TowBoat U.S. crew member delivered the tow line by paddling a sailboard out from the beach to his company’s tow boats. The two-person crew hunkered down inside the boat as they awaited the tow on Tuesday.____Sign up for free breaking news alerts from OCNJ Daily.____Neither the Ocean City Police Department nor the Ocean City Fire Department were called to respond to the incident. There was no distress call, and the State Police Marine Division had been unaware of the beaching until our call.As the tide approached high late Tuesday afternoon a TowBoat U.S. crew member paddled a sailboard out to one of his company’s boats and returned with a line to attach to the stranded sailboat. The tow boat was quickly able to spin the sailboat, but it pulled lightly for more than an hour before the rising tide and waves floated the craft. The Midpoint reportedly is headed for Seaview Harbor to dry out and make repairs before continuing its journey.A faulty steering cable reportedly caused the Midpoint to run aground in relatively calm seas overnight Monday into Tuesday.last_img read more

Supreme Court Suspends Executive Privileges for Government Officials

first_imgThe Supreme Court yesterday suspended its executive privileges (dispensation) that exempted executive branch officials, who are Attorneys-At-Law from sitting the examination to qualify as Counselor-At-Law.No specific date has been scheduled for the examination, but, the applicants are expected to sit for the examination before the end of 2018, according to Attorney Darryl Ambrose Nmah, Communication Director of the Judiciary. As Counselor-At-Law, the person becomes a member of the Supreme Court Bar, which qualifies him or her to practice before the high court. And he or she must have practiced law for a period of five consecutive years, but the dispensation exempts the executive branch officials from the five years practiced. And, to become a member of the bar requires an applicant to pass moral character evaluation pass an ethics examination, and achieve an acceptable  score on the oral and written examination administered by the court. But, for years now, and including 2016, the Supreme Court granted the executive privileges also known as ‘dispensation’ to some government officials like former Inspector General Chris Massaquoi of the Liberia National Police (LNP), who did not sit the examination and was licensed as Counselor-At-Law.Col. Massaquoi did not practice law in the country for the five year period.Making the disclosure yesterday, Attorney Nmah said the decision now means that 20 of the 76 applicants who have applied for the dispensation will now be required to sit the examination.Nmah explained that the suspension would only be lifted after they have put into place several administrative standards to guide the issuing of dispensations.“The 20 Attorneys At-Law will now sit the examination like any other applicants for the Counselor At-Law examination,” he stated. He did not explain why the court has not suspended the dispensation, but the 20 applicants are the highest numbers to have applied for the executive privileges (dispensation). Most of the 20 applicants, a judicial source hinted the Daily Observer came from the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) and the Ministry of Labour (MOL).“Their petition for dispensation have all been rejected because of the suspension and they would sit the examination, if pass, they would be admitted to the Supreme Court bar,” Nmah maintained.“They are not going to enjoy anymore those privileges. They have to pass the test before they can practice before the Supreme Court, he said.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Vets remind pet owners on bird care

AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREWalnut’s Malik Khouzam voted Southern California Boys Athlete of the Week The damage is preventable if bird owners feed their winged pets properly, vets say. The CVMA recommends all bird owners consult their veterinarian about the best nutrition for their birds. Our feathered friends should see a veterinarian regularly, throughout their long lives. “Many times, I won’t see a parrot for a first check-up until it’s 20 years old, and that’s too late,’ says Dr. Alan Fudge, owner of Bird Doctor House Calls and president of the California Avian Laboratory. “By that time, a condition is chronic or life-threatening.’ Regular checkups with an avian specialist, who looks at behavioral and environmental issues as well as nutrition, are preventive medicine. Owners often are pleasantly surprised to see how a change in care routines eliminates a bird’s nervous habit or health problem. “Birds, by nature, are highly intelligent and social creatures and benefit from attention by their owners,’ says Fudge. The California Veterinary Medical Association on Tuesday reminded pet owners to remember birds when marking National Pet Wellness Month this month. The annual observation traditionally focuses on care for dogs and cats, but California veterinarians say this is an opportune time for bird owners to reassess their bird’s nutritional and behavioral needs. Healthy birds can be long-time companions if owners follow a few basic pet care steps: balanced diet, behavior management, and regular veterinary examinations. “The life expectancy of a bird can be 30 years or even much more,’ says CVMA president Eric Weigand, DVM. “But many birds die much earlier because of poor diets. Malnutrition can result in numerous disorders that damage the respiratory and digestive system as well as the skin, liver, bones, feathers and beak.’ last_img read more

Panasonic begins work on Denver future smart city, Peña Station next

first_imgPeña Station, currently a remote rail station south of Denver International Airport, may be the location of one of the most futuristic smart city developments.Denver Mayor Michael Hancock expressed his desire for Peña Station to be more than just a transit hub and earlier this year Panasonic jumped at the chance to make it a thriving community, outfitted with the latest in smart technologies.See Also: Xerox beacon technology brings retail to commutersPanasonic has moved its Enterprise Solutions Division headquarters to Peña Station and this month started installing LED street lights in the city-to-be, which are 60 to 70 percent more energy efficient than standard street lights. The LED street lights may be even more efficient as people begin to move to Peña Station, due to Panasonic’s Internet of Things (IoT) lighting platform, which dims the lights when the street is empty or during a full Moon.Panasonic also plans to create an energy grid at Peña Station that uses solar power for the day and batteries at night. This is similar to Fujisawa, a sustainable smart town in Japan that Panasonic has worked on since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2012.Panasonic starting with environmental sensorsPanasonic will begin to deploy environmental sensors that monitor air particles, cloud coverage, noise, temperature, and humidity. Argonne National Laboratory will develop the sensor, Panasonic will deploy it throughout Peña Station.Next year, Panasonic will also deploy the first self-driving shuttle, built by EasyMile. The EZ10 shuttle will provide access to Denver International Airport and travel at a top speed of 15 mph. As part of the deal, EasyMile will open its own North American headquarters inside Panasonic’s hub, providing Peña Station with more engineering jobs.MGL Partners, a Denver-based real estate development, will start construction of a 219-apartment unit next year. Other developers are looking at Peña Station as a possible destination for new construction.Panasonic has not set a time range for when Peña Station should be “complete”, but if the company is aiming for a few hundred residents, it may reach its target in a few years just from employers of various engineering firms. The Hustler’s Playbook: Spend Time with People More Successful Than You

first_img Essential Reading! Get my 3rd book: Eat Their Lunch “The first ever playbook for B2B salespeople on how to win clients and customers who are already being serviced by your competition.” Buy Now You can’t see your potential from where you are now. It isn’t visible to you. There is a reason that you should spend time and develop relationships with people who are more successful than you are now. But before we get into all the reasons this is true, we need to cover a few important issues.First, success is personal. It isn’t measured on a curve. Your definition of success and my definition of success might be vastly different. They may even be at odds. In fact, you living my definition of success might make you miserable, while me living your definition of success might not make me the least bit happy.Second, success can get a bad rap, and some people make the very pursuit of success a divisive issue. Success shouldn’t be divisive, and the idea that you need to surround yourself with people who have a greater level of success is not a judgment of the people you love and care about that aren’t experiencing the same level of success as the people you will need to spend time with. The reason you need to spend time with people who are more successful than you is because you can’t see your real potential from where you are now.Your potential is far greater than anything you can imagine. The only limit on your real potential is the limit of your awareness of what is possible for you. Your potential isn’t visible to you.Think about where you were years ago, when you weren’t as successful as you are right now in some area of your life. Your beliefs and behaviors were different than they are now. And even though you weren’t conscious of how they were limiting you, they acted as a governor on your success. At some point, you gained an awareness of what these beliefs and behaviors and changed them.Someone standing higher up on a mountain can see further than you can. They can also more easily see the path that is available to you, even if it isn’t yet clear to you. They have a greater view of your potential. By spending time with people who are more successful, you start to become conscious of what you believe and how it limits you. You also gain the advantage of transforming faster by finding people whose beliefs and behaviors you can model.Develop relationships with people who are more successful than you. Find mentors. Develop a mastermind group of people who have something you want, whatever that is, be it financial success or being a great parent, or whatever you call success.last_img read more

Euro 2016: In-form England take on Russia in Group B clash

first_imgEngland and Russia are the big beasts of Group B and, though each would love a winning start when they meet on Saturday, the fear of losing could well become all-pervading and lead to a cagey encounter. (Euro 2016 – Full Coverage) With games against Wales and Slovakia to come, and the potential for three teams to qualify with two guaranteed, a point at the Velodrome might look a very useful result in a couple of weeks. (Also read: England must ignore Euro expectations, says Adam Lallana)ENGLAND START FAVOURITES England, on the back of winning all 10 qualifiers, not to mention a rare victory in Germany in a friendly, start favourites and will expect to make the running in front of a 60,000 crowd that will be predominantly behind them. (Also read: Inexperience may cost Jamie Vardy Euro 2016 starting spot, says Arsene Wenger)However, despite that great run of form, England are anything but a settled side as Roy Hodgson struggles with the question of how to shoe-horn his form players into an established system.VARDY, KANE DEMAND SELECTION Strikers Jamie Vardy, fresh from leading Leicester City to the most unlikely Premier League title, and Harry Kane, the Premier League’s top scorer, seemingly demand selection. (Also read: England’s youth is a strength at Euro, says Daniel Sturridge)But Hodgson is adamant Wayne Rooney, the captain and most experienced squad member, should get a starting berth, leaving the coach experimenting with his attacking options right up to the last minute. At least he is picking from strength in that regard as his, and England’s more pressing concern is in central defence where any combination of Gary Cahill, Chris Smalling and John Stones has looked vulnerable and remains England’s Achilles heel.advertisementIMPRESSIVE STATISTICSEngland have not lost in 90 or 120 minutes in 22 Euro matches in finals and qualifiers, going back to a 3-2 defeat by Croatia in November 2007.The impressive statistics are skewed, however, as they lost on penalties to Italy in the 2012 quarter-finals and failed to qualify in 2008.Russia reached the semi-finals that year with a side full of passion and pace but they were disappointing in 2012 and in the 2014 World Cup and the current crop are not a group to have fans on the edge of their seats.TECHNICALLY ADEPT They are, however, a well-organised and technically adept squad and coach Leonid Slutsky has quickly developed a strong team spirit since taking over from Fabio Capello last August. He has, however, been forced to change his plans somewhat after injuries ruled midfielders Alan Dzagoev and, after last week’s 1-1 draw with Serbia, Igor Denisov out of the tournament. With that to deal with and winnable games on the horizon, Russia are unlikely to take too many risks on Saturday, leaving it up to England to decide whether to open up in all-out pursuit of victory or indulge in 90 minutes of cautious chess.last_img read more

Israeli minister in unprecedented visit to UAE mosque

first_imgAbu Dhabi, Oct 29 (AFP) Israeli minister Miri Regev on Monday shared a video on Facebook of her touring a famed mosque in the United Arab Emirates, in an unprecedented visit by a cabinet member. The culture and sport minister, known for controversial comments about Arabs, was dressed in a red abaya with a white scarf covering her hair at Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.”I toured the site,” Regev told the camera, in Hebrew, surrounded by a group of people in traditional Emirati dress.”This is the first time that an Israeli minister is here on a visit.” Regev, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party, visited the mosque on Sunday, according to her spokesman. Her country does not have diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates.Israeli officials publicly toured landmark sites in the UAE at the weekend, the first such visit, days after Netanyahu travelled to the neighbouring Gulf state of Oman. The delegation, which includes the country’s communications minister, was in Dubai for the International Telecommunication Union Plenipotentiary Conference this week.”We arrived the day (Sunday) before the conference. We went around the town, and we visited the mall,” a member of the delegation told AFP.”We were impressed, and we didn’t expect the town to be like this, this beautiful,” she said on condition of anonymity. The visit came a day after Israel’s national anthem was played at a judo tournament in Abu Dhabi after one of its athletes won gold – believed to be the first time the anthem has been played publicly in an Arab Gulf state.advertisementNetanyahu visited Oman on Thursday for talks with the country’s ruler, Sultan Qaboos, on regional security issues, according to official statements by both countries. And at a cabinet meeting on Sunday, Netanyahu said of his Oman visit: “There will be more.” Israeli Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz is scheduled to visit Oman next week for a transportation conference, according to his office.Netanyahu has long sought a rapprochement with other Arab states, citing in part concerns over their common enemy Iran. But Israel currently has full diplomatic relations with only two Arab states, Egypt and Jordan, as Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory remains a major obstacle to official recognition by Arab countries.
