Byrd (T-AKE 4) the afternoon of July 20. July 23, 2014 The RAS lasted roughly two hours with more than 120,000 gallons of fuel being transferred to Roosevelt. Byrd is one of 12 dry cargo/ammunition ships operated by Military Sealift Command that provide underway replenishment of fuel to U.S. Navy ships at sea. Byrd pulled alongside the Roosevelt to coordinate the transfer of fuel lines from one ship to the other. The RAS began when the two ships were traveling parallel to each other moving at the same speed. Once the ships are at a close enough proximity, Sailors shot a phone and distance line from the receiving ship to Byrd to establish communication and help keep accurate distance between each ship. Once communications were established, the process of transferring the fuel lines began.“Without proper teamwork, the whole evolution could completely come apart,” said Cmdr. Jason Reller, commanding officer of Roosevelt. “It takes the diligence of both ships to ensure a successful RAS.”Once the fuel transfer hoses successfully coupled the ships, the refueling could begin.Roosevelt is deployed as a part of the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group supporting maritime security operations and theater security co-operation efforts in the U.S. 5th fleet area of responsibility.[mappress]Press Release, July 23, 2014; Image: Wikimedia View post tag: News by topic View post tag: Navy View post tag: Replenishment View post tag: americas USS Roosevelt Ends Replenishment-at-Sea View post tag: Defence View post tag: sea Share this article View post tag: USS Roosevelt View post tag: Naval
CRICKET South Africa (CSA) has confirmed former national team bosses Gary Kirsten and Eric Simons will be involved in the process to select a head coach for the Proteas.CSA revealed yesterday it intends to have a new coach and management team in place by the start of September.Incumbent Russell Domingo was informed in January that he will need to reapply for his position if he wishes to remain in charge of the team.Kirsten, who enjoyed considerable success with South Africa as a player and coach, and Simons will be joined on the selection panel by CSA board members Norman Arendse and Rihan Richards. The fifth member of the panel will be Oupa Nkagisang, the president of North West Cricket who serves on CSA’s transformation and cricket pipeline committees.CSA president Chris Nenzani said: “There has been uninformed negativity in the media about the board’s decision to start a process to recruit a coach for the men’s senior national team. But the reasons for our doing this were obvious and the committee we have appointed to oversee the process will make sure that we have all bases covered.”The CSA board also confirmed all members of the National Selection Panel will remain in place until the end of the 2019 Cricket World Cup. Oliver Dowden calls on ‘best and brightest’ to help restart UK sports May 21, 2020 ITV secures three-year British racing broadcast deal August 5, 2020 StumbleUpon Over recent years, the UK racing sector has faced a number of difficulties including cuts to funding, concerns over age-verification measures and engagement with a wider audience.Speaking to Ben Keith, Owner of Star Sports, at Betting on Sports he explained that the on-course sector is doing everything it can to prevent under-aged gambling. He said: “I don’t really think that any more can be done. I bet on-course myself at the festivals when it’s particularly busy. I understand that it’s against the law for those under the age of 18 to bet, and that is correct, however I know that all of the staff on my pitch certainly check those that look too young.“We check their ID, and we know that other bookmakers are also checking. I’m certain that as an on-course bookmaker myself that we are all doing everything we can.Attracting a new audience has also presented a major hurdle for the racing sector, with broadcasters opting to incorporate social media and fashion insights to attract a younger audience.Keith continued: “ I think that ITV has put a different spin on racing compared to Channel 4, no better and no worse, just different. They have embraced more social media and fashion. So you see people like Chris Hughes and Matt Chapman, they caught a younger audience.“I believe that this is very important. ITV is for the gala days, let’s be diverse. You’re not obliged to wear a top hat and tails or a trilby to go racing so let’s not give that impression. Purists can always watch racing on other days of the week.“So racing needs to be diverse, be fun, be welcoming and avoid being sneery with difficult vocabulary which could otherwise put people off.” Share ITV Racing begins contract renegotiations with UK Racing May 21, 2020 Share Submit Related Articles
Tropical Storm Humberto narrowly missed the Abaco and Grand Bahama islands, which are just beginning the recovery process after taking a devastating hit from Hurricane Dorian earlier this month.By 11 a.m. Sunday, the National Hurricane Center said Humberto was located about 180 miles north-northwest of Great Abaco Island and was moving at 7 mph to the north with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph.The NHC believes the storm will likely become a hurricane by Sunday night, but should remain far from the Bahamas and the U.S. coast by that time. However, Humberto briefly caused the closure of small airports in the Bahamas, and sent people in already damaged homes to seek shelter yet again, temporarily interrupting the distribution of needed supplies, including food and water. As the storm passed, residents and officials resumed their Hurricane Dorian cleanup and recovery efforts.U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited Great Abaco on Saturday to support the ongoing humanitarian efforts. He says, “Hurricane Dorian has been classified as Category 5. I think it’s Category Hell,” adding that he is horrified by the “level of systematic devastation.”The islands’ official death toll from Dorian remains at 50, and another 1,300 are still reported missing. However, officials say the list is preliminary, and some people may just be unable to connect with their loved ones.
