Trey Anastasio Taps Page McConnell, Mike Gordon, Grace Potter, Dave Grippo In VT [Videos]

first_imgNext up for Trey is a run of dates with various symphony orchestras later this month, beginning with a performance with the Nashville Symphony at Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, TN. For more information on his upcoming symphony dates, head to his website.[h/t – JamBase][Cover photo via Instagram user @thirdstoneimages] On Sunday night, Trey Anastasio Band put on a memorable set to close out Vermont’s Grand Point North Music Festival, the annual event on the Burlington waterfront. Although the festival is curated and usually headlined by Grace Potter, she ceded the final set to Trey, who made the most of his rare performance in Phish‘s city of origin with a slew of familiar faces joining him and his solo outfit. The band delivered a set full of tried-and-true live TAB favorites including “Money, Love & Change,” “Sand,” “Burlap Sack & Pumps,” and “Cayman Review,” and more recent tunes like “Dark & Down,” “Shine,” and “Everything’s Right,” which got heavy play in both the TAB and Phish rotation this past summer. In addition, TAB issued a rendition of Page McConnell-penned Phish jazz ditty, “Magilla.” As if the instrumental somehow summoned its creator, McConnell himself emerged to lend his chops to a set-closing “First Tube.” Page and Ray Paczkowski both avail themselves impressively, adding extra sonic girth to a tune with which they are both intimately familiar, considering its prevalence in both the Phish and TAB live repertoires. The McConnell guest appearance marked his first in a Trey solo show since November 8, 2005 in New York City, when he simultaneously played keys with then-member Les Hall and fellow guest John Medeski, also on “First Tube.”With a Phish-y sit-in already accomplished, the crowd was unaware what surprises the band had in store for the encore–the last gasp of music from a weekend filled with skilled performances and talented artists. What would Trey do next? When Anastasio walked back onstage, he did so with a different–though excitingly familiar–group of musicians: Grace Potter and one more Phish bandmate, bassist Mike Gordon. The sit-in came as a surprise to many: Mike hadn’t sat in on one of Trey’s sets since his solo performance at 2008’s Rothbury, when Phish was still “broken up,” and despite the fact that they were featured on more than one of the same festival lineups this past summer, the two had not joined forces onstage at any of them. However, those paying attention on social media may not have been so shocked, as Gordon specifically referenced the possibility of a Burlington sit-in this week. In a Facebook Q&A ahead of Friday’s release of his own new solo album OGOGO, Gordon addressed the lack of solo band collabs this summer:The Internet: Loved seeing you at High Sierra this year! Did you & Trey decide to not be a “guest” during each others’ sets on purpose??? Also, do you prefer indoor venues or festivals??Mike Gordon: Trey and I were there on different days, and giving each space, but we did talk, and this weekend we’ll both be in the same town, so you never know!Anastasio, Gordon, and Potter, began the show’s encore with a trio performance of Phish’s “Water In The Sky.” From there, Trey had one more trick up his sleeve, as he welcomed saxophonist Dave Grippo, a founding member of TAB and a member of Phish’s storied Giant Country Horns, who toured with the quartet back in 1991. Grippo added extra brass texture to “Push On ‘Til The Day” to send the Vermont crowd home with smiles on their faces.Watch fan-shot footage of Trey Anastasio with Grace Potter and Mike Gordon at Grand Point North in Burlington, VT below via YouTube user gayanastasio:last_img read more

Europa: Club Brugge fans regret Dennis’ injury

first_img Brugge’s chances of a Europa League giant-killing against Manchester United have been rocked by the news that star striker, will miss out through injury. The Belgian side will also be without captain Ruud Vormer with both players not making the trip to Manchester. Dennis, 22, was the scorer in Belgium after capitalising on Sergio Romero’s horrendous error to put them ahead in the tie. The Nigerian international has scored three times in Europe this season including a Champions League double against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. Midfielder Vormer has been an important figure this season having made 26 starts in the league. Club Brugge are yet to taste victory on English soil having lost ten of their last 12 matches.Advertisement Despite their opponent’s injury concerns, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is likely to take little risk with his team selection by announcing a strong starting XI. The Norwegian has no new fresh injury concerns while also being boosted by the return of midfielder Scott McTominay. Marcus Rashford remains a long-term absentee while Paul Pogba is still a while away from making a full recovery. Solskjaer said of his progress: “He’s not been part of team training yet. “And it will depend on how he feels, or when he feels ready to do that. So he’s not anywhere near that yet.” Read Also:Oliseh: Emmanuel Dennis can play for big clubs in Europe Bruno Fernandes started on the bench in the first leg but could come back into the fold to give United a boost going forward. Gov’t Resists Convicted Mercenary Appeal

first_imgThe Government of Liberia on Monday, June 16 filed a 13-count response to the defense motion seeking a new trial for 13 persons convicted of mercenarism by Jurors of Criminal Court ‘D.’Jurors on June 10 brought down a guilty verdict against the defendants for their involvement in mercenary activities in neighboring La Côte d’Ivoire, where several persons including seven UN peacekeepers were allegedly ambushed and killed. However, the defendants’ lawyers pleaded with the Court to reject the jurors’ verdict and declare a new trial in the matter.Interestingly, Judge Emery Paye will now be compelled to reschedule his final judgment that was scheduled for Tuesday, June 17, and rule on the defense motion, a common request when convictions are appealed.Instead, the Criminal Court Judge has scheduled hearing of the request for a new trial on Tuesday, June 17.The prosecution’s response among others, said the jurors took into consideration  testimonies including those of the rebuttal witnesses, specifically Roland Garwo, who testified that he crossed the defendants in his canoe following their attacked in La Côte d’Ivoire. They further said that some of the witnesses, like Thomas Glaider, Pascal Kollie and Baryee Gaye corroborated each other and hence, the jurors having tried the fact could not hesitate but to arrive at a guilty verdict. They argued that Gaye  pointed to the fact that the defendants had based in Garlo’s Town and others including the Thai forest and controlled areas in that sisterly nation. They went further to say that one of their witnesses, Inspector Savior Howard visited the crime scene, as opposed to the defense lawyers claim that none of the investigators, whose findings led to the indictment of the defendants visited the crime scene in both Liberia and La Côte d’Ivoire. They also argued that Witness Gaye, when he testified named weapons like M-60, RPG and AK-47, as  guns used by the defendants to fight in La Côte d’Ivoire.Prosecution prayed the court not to disturb the unanimous verdict of the jurors, whom they claimed,  listened  attentively and  took note of the testimonies of all their witnesses including Prince Barclay  as well as the defendants  mere denial. They maintained that the defense request constitutes total disrespect for the integrity of the jurors.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Oyinbo Princess, the Nollywood actress with a difference

first_imgCD AndersonA young British actress is fast becoming one of Nigeria’s top film stars. Nicknamed “Oyinbo (white) Princess” by her growing legion of fans in Nigeria and the wider African diaspora, Claire Edun is using her love of African culture and proficiency in pidgin English to give Nollywood a more global appeal.Edun became familiar with Nigerian culture while growing up in the Peckham area of London, where there is a large community of African expatriates. She got her love of Nollywood films from her friends, and soon mastered the pidgin dialect – a mix of English, indigenous African languages and street slang – used in the popular films. She had always had a passion for acting and drama, and had starred in local theatre productions while still at school.Nollywood’s Oyinbo Princess, British actress Claire Edun is proving popular with Nigerian audiences. (pic: Oynibo Princess Instagram) pic.twitter.com/NRLa6uOb88— CD Anderson (@bizarrojerri) October 13, 2016As an adult working as a flight attendant, Edun fell further in love with Africa and its people during her flight stopovers on the continent. She took to Nigeria in particular, where she enthusiastically embraced the music, art and culture. She married a Nigerian expat, Richard, who taught her more about Nigerian culture, including the complexities of pidgin English. In 2014, Edun posted a video online of herself speaking pidgin and was spotted by one of Nollywood’s top producers, Lancelot Imasuen, who offered her the opportunity to star in one of his films.Authentic Tentative Marriage, with Alexx Ekubo & UK actress Claire Edun a popular Nollywood romantic comedy (pic: Oyinbo Princess Instagram) pic.twitter.com/Emmf5SoW0c— CD Anderson (@bizarrojerri) October 13, 2016ATM: Authentic Tentative Marriage is a romantic comedy with a subtle political edge. In the film Alexx Ekubo, one of the country’s most popular heartthrob actors, plays a man who wants to escape Nigeria by marrying a white English woman. But he soon rediscovers a love for his country and culture, thanks to his new wife’s audacious – and often hilarious – assimilation into Nigerian life. Critics praised Edun’s comedic zest in the role, her command of the often intricate and rapidly fluid language, as well as her sensitivity in portraying the clash between two different cultures.A scene from the Nollywood film ATM, featuring UK actress Claire Edun (pic: Oyinbo Princess Instagram) pic.twitter.com/Ir792KCzWZ— CD Anderson (@bizarrojerri) October 13, 2016Edun told the UK’s Daily Mail that the film had good, strong messages: “(It’s all about) having pride in where you come from rather than thinking the grass is always greener elsewhere.”The film has been a hit with Nigerian audiences, who responded enthusiastically to Edun’s role. The producers plan on taking the film to the UK and Europe not only to gain a wider audience in the large African diaspora in the region, but also to show traditional Western filmgoers that the two worlds of cinema can meet in a good, positive way.Meanwhile, Edun, dividing her time between the UK and Lagos, is hoping to capitalise on the success of her first role and her growing popularity with film fans, and land more roles in Nollywood productions.Watch the trailer for ATM: Authentic Tentative Marriage:Source: BBC AfricaSouthAfrica.info reporterWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? American household income finally topped 1999 peak last year

first_imgWASHINGTON – In a stark reminder of the damage done by the Great Recession and of the modest recovery that followed, the median American household only last year finally earned more than it did in 1999.Incomes for a typical U.S. household, adjusted for inflation, rose 3.2 per cent from 2015 to 2016 to $59,039, the Census Bureau said. The median is the point at which half the households fall below and half are above.Last year’s figure is slightly above the previous peak of $58,665, reached in 1999. It is also the first time since the recession ended in 2009 that the typical household earned more than it did in 2007, when the recession began.Trudi Renwick, the bureau’s assistant division chief, cautioned that the census in 2013 changed how it asks households about income, making historical comparisons less than precise.Still, the Census data is closely watched because of its comprehensive nature. It is based on interviews with 70,000 households and includes detailed data on incomes and poverty across a range of demographic groups.Elise Gould, a senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute, said that adjusting for the change in methodology, median income still remains below its 1999 peak. Yet she added that the census report shows that American households have made significant economic progress in 2015 and 2016.“We are definitely pulling ourselves out of the deep hole of the Great Recession,” Gould said on a conference call with reporters.Median household income rose $4,641, or 8.5 per cent, from 2014 through 2016. That’s the best two-year gain on records dating to 1967, according to analysts at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.Yet that improvement comes after a steep recession and a slow recovery that left most American households with barely any income increases. The lack of meaningful raises has left many people feeling left behind economically, a sentiment that factored into the 2016 elections. The report also showed that income inequality worsened last year, extending a trend in place for roughly four decades. Average incomes among the wealthiest 5 per cent climbed 5.5 per cent to $375,088. Average incomes for the poorest one-fifth of households, meanwhile rose 2.5 per cent to $12,943.Other measures of Americans’ economic health improved. The poverty rate fell last year to 12.7 per cent from 13.5 per cent, Census said. The number of people living below the poverty line declined 2.5 million to 40.6 million. That brings the proportion of households living below the poverty line back to pre-recession levels, though it remains about one and half percentage points higher than its lowest point, in 2000.A family of four with an income below $24,563 was defined as poor last year. And the proportion of Americans without health insurance fell to 8.8 per cent, the report showed, down from 9.1 per cent. It is the lowest proportion on record. The Census report covers 2016, the last year of the Obama administration.Robert Greenstein, president of the CBPP, argued that the agenda being pursued by President Donald Trump and congressional Republican leaders would reverse those gains. The income gains reflect mostly a rise in the number of Americans with jobs and in people working full time, the agency said. That means households were more likely to include a full-time worker. It also suggests that pay raises for those who already had jobs remained meagre.About 1.2 million more Americans earned income in 2016 than in 2015, and 2.2 million more had full-time year-round jobs.Incomes rose for most demographic groups. African-American median household income jumped 5.7 per cent to $39,490 in 2016 from the previous year, the most of any group. Among Latinos, it rose to 4.3 per cent to $47,675. For whites, the gain was 2 per cent to $65,041.Asian-Americans reported the highest household incomes, at $81,431, which was little changed from 2015.Jared Bernstein, a senior fellow at the CBPP, said the gains among African-Americans typically occur later in an economic recovery as employers widen their searches and step up hiring among traditionally disadvantaged groups.“The solid economy is helping to close racial gaps,” he said. “It won’t make them go away, but it is headed in the right direction.”The report found that the gender gap in wages narrowed last year for the first time since 2007. Women earned 80.5 per cent of men’s earnings, up from 79.6 per cent in 2015.Still, underneath the broad improvements nationwide, pockets of hardship remain. Poverty rates fell in the Northeast and South in 2016 but were mostly unchanged in the Midwest and West.Una Osili, a researcher at the Salvation Army and a professor of economics at Indiana University, said the non-profit group reported a spike in requests for health-related assistance in the Midwest last year, driven mostly by demand for opioid addiction treatment. That happened even in states like Indiana, where the unemployment rate and poverty fell, she said.In Nevada and some other Western states, the economic recovery has raised housing costs, offsetting some of the benefit of income growth. In those states, “the recovery is a good thing, but your rent is now higher,” Osili said.last_img read more
