Takeover targets? I think these could be the best UK shares to buy now!

first_img Our 6 ‘Best Buys Now’ Shares Paul Summers owns shares of ITV. The Motley Fool UK has recommended Avon Rubber, Frontier Developments, and ITV. Views expressed on the companies mentioned in this article are those of the writer and therefore may differ from the official recommendations we make in our subscription services such as Share Advisor, Hidden Winners and Pro. Here at The Motley Fool we believe that considering a diverse range of insights makes us better investors. London-listed companies are being snapped up by bidders at a fair clip and I can see this increasing in 2021. The latest bid is for gaming developer Codemasters. It has received an offer from US titan Electronic Arts. If accepted, holders will receive 604p per share. That’s a big improvement on the 485p recently offered by rival Take-Two. The fact that Codemasters’ price is already at 654p, however, suggests a counter-bid may be forthcoming!5G is here – and shares of this ‘sleeping giant’ could be a great way for you to potentially profit!According to one leading industry firm, the 5G boom could create a global industry worth US$12.3 TRILLION out of thin air…And if you click here we’ll show you something that could be key to unlocking 5G’s full potential…This has made me wonder which UK shares might be next to receive bids. Here are three that spring to mind. But I’d never buy a share just in the hope of its being bought. These are all shares I think have strong appeal even without a takeover boost.Frontier DevelopmentsSticking with gaming, Cambridge-based Frontier Developments (LSE: FDEV) could also be on larger players’ shopping lists. It’s the brains behind titles including Planet Zoo and Jurassic World: Evolution. But Frontier wouldn’t be sold for peanuts. Thanks to the popularity of gaming during lockdowns, the shares have soared 155% year-to-date. This gives the company a valuation of £1.2bn!If the battle for Codemasters tells us anything, however, it’s that overseas gaming giants will pay up to steal a march on competitors. Perhaps Chinese internet giant Tencent may wish to make a bid. It does already own almost 9% of Frontier. Regardless of whether this happens, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s further consolidation in the gaming industry in 2021. With eSports looking set to be one of the investing themes of the next decade, it’s surely only a matter of time before other UK shares get taken out. Avon RubberAnother firm that could find itself an opportunistic bid target before long is body-armour builder Avon Rubber (LSE: AVON). It’s a lot cheaper now than it was at the beginning of last week.As fellow Fool Royston Wild covered in detail, Avon’s share price tumbled by 14% last Thursday on news that product approval relating to two contracts had been delayed. A protest had also been made relating to another contract. As a one-time holder of the stock, I’d be sorry to see a firm like Avon acquired by an overseas bidder. Nevertheless, I can see the appeal. Here’s a high-quality firm in a niche market with bulletproof finances.Regardless of takeover speculation on my part, I may need to seriously consider welcoming Avon back to my portfolio if it drops much further. The share price fell another 7% on Friday and now trades at just two-thirds of the valuation it had at the beginning of December.ITVNo takeover talk is complete without mentioning FTSE 250 member ITV (LSE: ITV). The Love Island producer has had a target on its back since Sky was bought in 2018.The attractions of ITV aren’t hard to fathom. In addition to its various channels, the broadcaster has its very successful Studios division. It’s also entered the streaming market with its BritBox offering as part of its digital transformation. If a potential suitor wants a cracking deal, they need to show their hand soon. Should advertising revenue pick up in 2021 with dividends reinstated, ITV could be on its way back to the FTSE 100. The shares are already up 50% since early November! If a deal happens, my money’s on telecoms company Liberty Global. It owns 10% of ITV already. I’m sure you’ll agree that’s quite the statement from Motley Fool Co-Founder Tom Gardner. But since our US analyst team first recommended shares in this unique tech stock back in 2016, the value has soared. What’s more, we firmly believe there’s still plenty of upside in its future. In fact, even throughout the current coronavirus crisis, its performance has been beating Wall St expectations. And right now, we’re giving you a chance to discover exactly what has got our analysts all fired up about this niche industry phenomenon, in our FREE special report, A Top US Share From The Motley Fool. “This Stock Could Be Like Buying Amazon in 1997” Enter Your Email Address I would like to receive emails from you about product information and offers from The Fool and its business partners. Report: Investors Not Buying Into Housing Market

But you should want to hear about housing, because the evidence is overwhelming,” the article states. Rebounding from the housing crash of 2008, Forbes states that 2018 was also a “terrible year for housing,” as mortgage rates rose for the first time in five years, and the U.S. Home Construction ETF dropped 32%. The report, however, states that the market is nowhere near a bust, and that housing is still affordable for most Americans. Unisom’s 2019 Home Affordability Report, however, stated it now takes 14 years for those making a median income to save for a 20% down payment on a median-price homes, meaning many prospective millennial homebuyers won’t achieve homeownership until their 40s.The report states that the monthly payment needed to support a home purchase with a down payment of 20% grew by 12% between 2017 and 2018, far outpacing the growth of income during that period of 6%.The Forbes report also downplayed the notion that millennials will not enter the housing market. “Census Bureau figures show the number of households in America just hit an all-time high at 122 million,” the Forbes report stated. A survey from SunTrust found that more millennials are focusing on homeownership before marriage, as the survey found that among more than 2,000 U.S. adults, nearly half of millennials (aged 22-38) who have been married say they and/or their spouse owned a home before marriage (48%), compared to only 35% of baby boomers (ages 55-73).”People are choosing from many different paths and reaching common life milestones at a wider age span than before, changing when they decide to purchase a home,” said Sherry Graziano, Mortgage Transformation Officer at SunTrust. The survey also found that an increasing number of couples are entering marriage where both individuals own a home. According to the survey, 25% of unmarried women and 21% of unmarried men said, if faced with this decision, they would prefer to sell both places and buy a new one after getting married.  Mike Albanese is a reporter for DS News and MReport. 95 aircraft parked at Indonesian airports as virus puts airlines’ operations on halt

first_imgThe I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, Bali, has the most parked planes with a total of 30 aircraft, while Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, East Java, has 19 aircraft parked on its apron. AP I, which manages 15 airports in the central and eastern parts of Indonesia, recorded a total of 17.78 million passengers using its airports in the first quarter of this year, an 8.11 percent drop from 19.3 million in the same period last year. Aircraft traffic also fell by 6 percent to 175,143 flights in the first quarter from 184,085 flights during the same period last year.A combination of flight cancelations, travel restrictions and the sharp drop in air travel demand because of COVID-19 has also forced airports to adjust their operations by reducing their opening hours. AP I has decided to prolong its operational adjustments to deal with the drastic passenger movement at the airport. “Angkasa Pura I is prolonging the adjustments in several airports until May or July, but we are not closed to the possibility that operational adjustments will be extended again if the pandemic shows now positive developments,” said AP I president director Faik Fahmi on Monday. The pandemic has left more than 16,000 passenger jets parked around the world, according to data from Cirium, which provides travel industry data and analytics.Meanwhile, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimated that 25 million jobs in aviation and all related sectors, representing 11.2 million jobs in the Asia Pacific, are at risk due to COVID-19,Topics : A sharp decline in air travel as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic has forced Indonesian airlines to ground more of their fleets.According to state-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I (AP I), 95 planes from various airlines are parked at its 11 airports across Indonesia for long-stay periods.  National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has the highest number of parked aircraft with 27, followed by Lion Air with 21 planes, AirAsia Indonesia with 19, Wings Air with 11 and Citilink Indonesia with eight aircraft, according to data provided by the operator on Monday.  last_img read more

‘NFL 100’ commercial: Breaking down everything you saw in epic ad

first_imgHaven’t stopped watching the most exciting two minutes from Super Bowl 53 since Sunday? You’re not alone. The ‘NFL 100′ commercial that aired to celebrate the league’s upcoming centennial season provided more highlights than 60 minutes of Rams vs. Patriots. As we replay the ad over and over and think about how we can re-create it at home, the challenge is figuring what was more impressive — the volume of NFL celebrities or the level of the action. 30. Gordon to Saquon Barkley… to the house? Gordon makes the running back move she’s had since age 9 and gets the ball to Barkley, who’s only six years older. He makes his patented hurdle and seems to run away from every other player in the room, all of whom are older than him.Got it all? Good. Time to watch it again for a 100th time. 1. Roger Goodell at his most Goodellian. He never breaks character, even when playing a caricature of himself. He sells right away that everything is hunky dory in the NFL, even though you know there’s about to be chaos.2. Aaron Donald sits with Dick Butkus and Mean Joe Greene. The NFL’s most ferocious defensive player and premier inside sack artist to the right of two Hall of Famers who once held those respective titles? Yes, please. Somewhere, late great former Rams Merlin Olsen and Deacon Jones had to be smiling.3. Peyton Manning behind Orlando Pace again. True Heisman Trophy geeks know that in the 1996 voting, Pace finished fourth as an offensive tackle while a junior Manning was eighth.4. Alvin Kamara and Drew Brees clap for the commissioner. Nominate them for best supporting Oscars now.5. Michael Strahan golf clapping, too. You can bet he thinks he should have hosted that dinner like everything else on TV.6. Rob Gronkowski sits with Brian Urlacher. Or was it Dwayne Johnson and John Cena?7. Juju doesn’t remember Ninja. Smith-Schuster can’t recall that he once gamed with e-sports superstar Tyler Blevins, just like soon he might not remember he once played with Antonio Brown.8. Marshawn Lynch and cake. Leave it to Beast Mode to keep quiet and still cause a big stir. Make that 28 times he’s fumbled in his career.9. Ndamukong Suh and Mike Singletary go crazy eyes. Pray for that golden football.10. Christian McCaffrey gets even crazier. Have to admit, few offensive players look so scary when going after the football. If only Cam Newton had him in the backfield late in Super Bowl 50.11. Joe Montana to Jerry Rice. Outside of Peyton, no QB has better comedic acting chops than Joe Cool. His “No can do, Cowboy!” toward Michael Irvin is the best line of the ad up to this point. Unfortunately, it was the worst pass of his career.12. Deion Sanders goes Prime Time before being Urlached. No Falcon or Bear was harmed in the filming of this motion picture.13. Larry Little, Paul Warfield and Larry Csonka. Those ’72 Dolphins are still sipping the same sweet champagne after all these years.14. Donald cheers on a running Todd Gurley. “C’mon, TG!” is something he wish he could have also said in the Super Bowl.15. Barry Sanders and Emmitt Smith. Sanders’ elusiveness is still there at age 50, but Smith’s shade game is still on point, too: “Y’all know I have more yards than they do, right?” takes over as the best line until …16. Peyton throws ‘deep’ to LaDainian Tomlinson. “You still got it,” Strahan marvels. “That hurt,” Manning says while wincing. It’s arguable he didn’t get enough screen time, and Eli was definitely underused in a cameo.17. Ed Reed goes Black Panther on LaDainian. The new Ravens Hall of Fame safety looked like he could still play and take out anyone at 40. The only thing missing from the best suit in the ad was vibranium. LT flashed his famous TD pose a little toon soon.18. Jim Brown. “Boy, this is a great party.” He retired early from the NFL for acting, so he didn’t sign up to act as a runner.19. Baker Mayfield and Tom Brady. “Get out there old man,” from Mayfield, the best line of the ad. The Browns quarterback follows that up with the best expression of the ad when Brady tosses all his Super Bowl rings — only five of six at that point — toward him. Yeah, it was totally worth it to get Mayfield to Boston to school that scene.20. Terry Bradshaw vs. Donald to Larry Fitzgerald. There’s a lot of Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Panthers love in those two minutes.21. Fitzgerald vs. Odell Beckham Jr. vs. Derwin James vs. Jalen Ramsey vs. Patrick Peterson. What was Bradshaw thinking throwing into triple coverage? No wonder he has “only” four rings.22. The Immaculate Reception 2: Electric Boogaloo. Now we get it. Bradshaw needed the pass tipped before Franco Harris could catch it and Greene could love it. Minor deduction for not getting Frenchy Fuqua involved.23. JuJu Smith-Schuster tiptoes on the table. It’s unsure how he got the ball from Harris, other than sharp editing. But the red shoes choreography deserves a Tony. Shaking Marshon head, smh.24. Here we Goodell again. Yep, through all the chaos in his league, he’s up at a podium, stating the obvious, calling OBJ open vs. Derwin James. 25. “Pat. Russ.” Patrick Mahomes and Russell Wilson had a great duel in December, and they got together again to film their scene at the Pro Bowl in Orlando in January. Mahomes had no choice but to no-look pass when flashing so quickly on the screen.26. Bend it like Odell, again. It was impressive that Mahomes hit Beckham on a catch reminscent of his lasting 2014 highlight, given Beckham filmed his scenes all the way out in LA.27. Sarah Thomas and Ron Torbert. Give NFL officials a break, will ya? Thomas is the NFL’s first female NFL official, the down judge on Torbert’s crew. Torbert, by the way is only the sixth African-American head referee in the league. Torbert correctly ruled Beckham’s catch on the ballroom table, while Thomas was right to call it a first down.28. Tony Gonzalez vs. Von Miller. Congrats to Gonzalez, who joined Reed both in the Hall of Fame Class of 2019 and in this commercial. Good thing he was in great shape to be handle being thrown down by Miller, Broncos outside linebacker turned cowboy hipster.29. Richard Sherman vs. Sam Gordon. Sherman has been one of the league’s smartest, outspoken and progressive-thinking players. It was brilliant to pair him with Gordon, the fierce, soon-to-be 16-year-old girls tackle-football advocate. She’s the third grounbreaking woman to appear in the ad, along with Thomas and, briefly, broadcaster Beth Mowins. center_img Here’s breaking down every scene and making sure you didn’t miss anything that a cast of 50 — including 22 current players, 22 former players, two officials, one future player, a gamer, a broadcaster and a commissioner — did in the full version of the spot, directed and coordinated brilliantly by Peter Berg of “Friday Night Lights.”MORE: “NFL 100” commercial was shot for free, no player was paidlast_img read more

Relief at the pump for motorists

first_img4 June 2012 The price of all grades of petrol will decrease by 55 cents a litre this week, and could drop even further next month, according to Investment Solutions economist Chris Hart. The Department of Energy announced on Friday that a litre of 95 ULP (unleaded petrol) in Gauteng will cost R11.67 from Wednesday on the back of lower international prices. The price of diesel with a 0.05 sulphur content will decrease by 24.82 cents a litre. Diesel with a 0.005 percent sulphur content will also decrease by the same amount. The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin will drop by 21 cents a litre. The single maximum national retail price for illuminating paraffin will decrease by 28 cents a litre, and the maximum retail price for LP Gas by 99 cents a kilogram. The average international prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin had decreased, the department said.Economist Chris Hart said the drop in the international crude prices and the rand complemented each other.“The fuel prices have been going up relentlessly for the past year,” Hart said.“This is a nice relief, and it could well be that its followed up by further relief at the beginning of next month, because the global crude prices have actually come down even further.”Sapalast_img read more

Martin’s 2014 Christmas Poem

first_imgWith apologies to Edgar Allan PoeOnce upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,Many unpaid bills and lettersfrom my local big-box store —While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my office door.“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered,“tapping at my office door —Only this and nothing more.” PREVIOUS POEMSCasey Makes a BetThe GrinchMacbethChristmas CarolsNight Before ChristmasHard it was to count my blessings; tired, I was still obsessing,Worried sick about the morrow. AFC Cup: Heavy defeat leaves Ceres needing miracle

first_imgSEA Games in Calabarzon safe, secure – Solcom chief Read Next Istiklol got a goal each at from Akhtam Nazarov and Romish Dhzalilov in the first half, before a second half brace from Manuchehr Dhzalilov ensured the Tajiks go into the second leg on Sept. 12 at Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City with a comfortable advantage. A 5-0 win at home will allow the Busmen to advance, but a 4-0 scorline will send the tie to extra time. But with the way the Tajik champions dominated the first leg, it seems the Busmen would need a miracle for that to happen.
